Who is the most appropriate professional for your care?

Based on the urgency of your care and the nature of your ailment, we have a large team of practitioners working in our practice and in allied services who are able to help you, so make sure you get to see the right person, at the right time, in the right place. A doctor is not always the right clinician for the job!

Pharmacy, Self Care and Referrals

See a Pharmacist

Many conditions can be treated without the need to see your GP.

Self-Care

A range of common illnesses such as cold and flu and minor injuries can be treated at home simply by combining a well-stocked medicine cabinet with plenty of rest. Many patients attend with conditions that would get better with self-care. Studies show that 25-40% of consultations with a GP are unnecessary so it would help if patients only booked an appointment with a GP if they really need to.

Examples of the ailments best treated by yourself are:

  • Upset stomach
  • Grazed knee
  • Common cold
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Colds & flu

There are many resources available which could help you to treat your illness without the need for an appointment. Please visit the NHS website for more information.

The nurses offer a wide range of treatment room services including wound care, prescribed injections, childhood vaccinations, ECGs, cervical screening (smear tests), health checks, pill checks, and much more.

They also offer annual routine reviews for patients diagnosed with asthma, diabetes, COPD, hypertension, CHD, and CKD and other long-term conditions.

Sickness Certificates (Fit Notes)

You must give your employer a doctor's 'fit note' (sometimes called a 'sick note') if you've been ill for more than 7 days in a row and have taken sick leave. This includes non-working days, such as weekends and bank holidays.

Chaperones

All patients are entitled to have a chaperone present for any consultation, examination or procedure where they consider one is required. The chaperone may be a family member or friend, but on occasions a formal chaperone may be preferred.

Patients are advised to ask for a chaperone, if required, at the time of booking an appointment, so that arrangements can be made and the appointment is not delayed in any way. The Healthcare Professional may also require a chaperone to be present for certain consultations

Text Message Reminders

You can now register to receive information by text message on your phone regarding appointments and health care.

Home Visits

If you are unable to leave the house to attend appointments and think you may require a home visit, please contact the surgery before 10.30am and our GP will arrange to assess you. This will usually include an initial phone call, so please keep your phone to hand.

Dental Emergency

Dentists are open for urgent and routine treatments. If you're registered with a dentist, you can contact the surgery by phone or in person.

Further information is available on the NHS website

Eye Problems

Sometimes it's easy to forget about our eyes because they often do not hurt when there's a problem.

The doctors at Thorpe Road Surgery encourage patients to get their eyes tested every 2 years (more often if advised by your ophthalmic practitioner or optometrist)

Visiting an optician

The NHS eye test is free of charge if you are in one of the eligible groups and your sight test is considered clinically necessary. For more information, read about free NHS sight tests and optical vouchers.
